Match Report

There are few better places to spend a summer Sunday than Sheffield Park, where the sun was shining, the outfield was lightning quick, and the National Trust crowd numbers were high.  Having won the toss, the Armadillos, unsurprisingly, chose to bat first, hoping to make the Stragglers spend the afternoon chasing leather.  Straggler fielding was refreshingly competent for a side whose warm-up largely consisted of discussing where to order fans and AC units for the pending heat wave. After a fast start from the Armadillos’ youth, the Straggs pegged them back to 100-3 and later 146-5, with wickets shared around by Will Evans, Charlie Munton, and Charlie Ellis.  Just when the visitors began dreaming of restricting the total to something comfortably chaseable, Armadillo Seavill had other ideas. His unbeaten 53 from 49 balls provided the late acceleration and nudged the hosts to a competitive 191-5 from their 35 overs.  The bowling honours belonged to Will Evans, whose 2-32 was deserved reward for a tidy spell, while Sam Gilliland and Billy Richardson went unjustly unrewarded for their efforts.

Chasing 183 on a belting wicket looked well within reach. Naturally, the Stragglers immediately made life difficult for themselves. George Baker-White made 10 before being caught behind by one of the catches of the century. Jim Mann endured a 14-ball stay for a determined duck before being run out in his last ever appearance at Sheffield Park, and when Harry Mann was bowled without troubling the scorers, the Straggs found themselves 23-3. Al Smallwood counter-attacked, with four boundaries on his way to a lively 23, while skipper Jasper looked to rebuild. Once Al departed, Charlie decided that Al’s counter-attacking approach was the right way to go. Subtlety has never really been part of Charlie’s make up, and this day was no different as he strode to the crease, no guard required and laced the first two balls of his innings for 4!  With work still to do, he continued with an extraordinary assault on the bowling, smashing an unbeaten 91 from just 53 balls (Straggs version of Bazball!). Nine fours disappeared to all corners of Sheffield Park, while five towering sixes ensured anyone fielding on the boundary enjoyed an afternoon’s cardio. His strike rate of over 170 suggested he may have had dinner reservations. A fifth-wicket partnership of 106 with Jasper got the Straggs within touching distance of the required total. When Jasper (49) departed, Charlie Ellis calmly played the perfect supporting role to Charlie with an unbeaten 14 from 19 balls, and the pair saw the Stragglers home in emphatic fashion, reaching 192-5 with nine balls to spare.

It was a chase that never quite felt comfortable until Munton decided it should be. One moment the required rate was being quietly calculated; the next, balls were disappearing into neighbouring sheep fields.  The scorebook will show a five-wicket victory, but it won’t capture the relaxed atmosphere, glorious weather, or the excellent hospitality from the Armadillos.  Another superb day of Stragglers cricket—and another reminder that, for the Stragglers, no chase is ever truly straightforward…. And worthy of note that the scores in 2025 were also 191/192 but with the Armadillos victorious.
