Standard Athletic Club arrived at Belmont somewhat bruised after an encounter with the BB, and were looking for some easy runs. On a track offering little to the bowlers, and inserted by Matt Smallwood, the SAC batting certainly seemed to have recovered some of their poise. The Allport combination removed a couple, who ventured down the track, but there were those who were questioning the wisdom of the skipper, as SAC marched confidently on to a declaration at 241 for 4.
They had, however, reckoned without Jasper Smallwood and Charlie Munton. Starting with a degree of circumspection, Jasper, encouraged by Charlie’s dismissing of his first ball for 4, let loose, and they launched a whirlwind assault, to put on 183 in 19 overs for the second wicket. Just to keep the crowd guessing, the Stragglers still contrived a collapse, but the hard work had been done, and Matt joined Theo to secure victory by 5 wickets. Jaspers’ 119 was a remarkable knock.
