Match Report

In the half light just before 8pm, from the last ball of the 52nd and penultimate over, and with 9 wickets down Elham struck the winning runs to reach the huge target of 156! With the honourable exception of Theo Allport, fresh from four sleepless nights in Edinburgh, and Jonathan Neame, fresh from a Greek idyll, who both batted with confident assurance, the Straggler batting was woeful. All out for 155 forty minutes before tea. The commentary team had booked out of the Hotel.

However, it proved not to be such an easy chase. Hugo Snape picked up one before the tea interval, and then the old-pros (the Master Brewer and the Chairman) scuttled out the middle order to have the opposition at 60 for 6. Elham, however, ground on relentlessly into the Stygian gloom, but with wickets falling again at 93 and 123 keeping the Stragglers in the hunt. Their captain looked to be taking them home, when Hugo induced another edge, and any result was now possible. Keeping a cool head the final pair sliced their way to victory.
